Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire. It's situated directly to the east of Welwyn Garden City, and is close to the A10 trunk road between London and Cambridge. The town grew around a ford on the River Lea, near its confluences with the Rivers Minram, Beane and Rib. Hertford Castle was built on a site fortified by Edward the Elder in 913, and King Henry II reconstructed the castle between 1170 and 1174. Most internal buildings of the castle have since been demolished, with the main surviving section being the Grade I listed Tudor Gatehouse.
