Organise your catering service with commercial prep hire equipment. Maintain safe food temperatures using hot cupboards, bain maries, and chafing dishes.

Start Planning Your Event Today

Event caterers and venue managers rely on accurate temperature control to serve dishes in prime condition. Maintaining cooked food above the critical 63°C mark prevents spoilage and meets strict health regulations. Sourcing commercial prep hire units gives your kitchen team the tools they need to hold main courses and sauces at safe, palatable temperatures throughout the service period. Guests expect warm food, and commercial warming units deliver that exact result.

Selecting Equipment for Prep Hire

You will find several types of warming units to match specific catering applications. Choosing the correct equipment depends on the food item, service duration, and presentation format.

  • Hot Cupboards: These heavy-duty units hold plated meals or multiple serving trays. They feature two or three internal shelves and maintain temperatures between 60°C and 80°C. Caterers position them behind the scenes to keep hundreds of plates warm during a sit-down meal service. They also hold large quantities of food in gastronorm pans ready for replenishing a buffet. Models come in different sizes, including units capable of holding up to 120 dinner plates.

  • Bain Maries: A bain marie uses a water bath to heat delicate foods without drying them out or burning the contents. They hold gravies, sauces, curries, and pre-cooked dishes. You can select electric or gas versions. They accommodate standard gastronorm pans, allowing you to mix different sizes for various food items. Their gentle heat maintains moisture and texture.

  • Chafing Dishes: Self-contained chafing dishes offer an elegant presentation format for direct guest access at a buffet. These units use fuel paste burners beneath a water pan to keep food in the upper pan warm. Full-size stainless steel chafing dishes hold one full-size 1/1 gastronorm pan or combinations of smaller pans. They suit outdoor events or venues with limited power access.

  • Heated Gantries & Displays: Heated gantries focus heat downwards onto food for shorter holding times and visual appeal. Many units feature a heated base. They suit environments like carvery stations or self-service counters where food moves at pace. They keep roasted meats or baked goods warm and visible to guests.

Operational Considerations and Ordering

Proper use of warming equipment requires careful planning. Always pre-heat warming units to their target temperature before adding food. Load food that is already hot straight from cooking to reduce time spent in the danger zone between 8°C and 63°C. Avoid overfilling units, as this restricts air circulation and creates cold spots. Regular temperature checks with a food thermometer confirm safe holding. For long service periods, rotating food or replenishing small batches keeps dishes fresh. As you finalise your prep hire requirements, remember to coordinate your serving items. We stock matching crockery hire and cutlery hire to complete your buffet stations.
