Street food events range from small pop-up markets to large outdoor festivals. This guide covers the seating, tables, and catering equipment you need to hire for each format.
Street food events range from a handful of vendors at a small pop-up market to several hundred traders at a large outdoor festival. The hire requirements shift significantly between those two formats, so it is worth working through what your specific event needs before placing an order.
Beer bench and table sets are the standard seating format for street food events. Each set is freestanding, seats 6 to 8 people, and packs down for transport. They suit outdoor hard-standing or marquee flooring and work well when guests are moving between multiple traders rather than sitting for a single course. Beer benches read as informal and festival-appropriate, which matches the format.
For smaller pop-up markets or indoor street food events, folding chairs paired with trestle tables give a lighter, more flexible setup. A 6ft trestle table seats 6 on benches or 4 to 5 on chairs with comfortable spacing. Folding chairs are faster to set up and take down than bench sets, which matters if you are working with a short site access window.
Traders need tables for worktops, display surfaces, and service counters. A 6ft trestle table is the standard vendor table. For vendors who need more surface area, two 6ft tables end-to-end or a single 8ft table covers most setups. Position vendor tables with enough depth behind them for the operator to work and store stock without encroaching on the public walkway.
Hot food vendors often need chafing dishes to hold prepared food at temperature while guests queue and collect orders. Chafing dishes work on gel fuel sachets, not electricity, so they suit outdoor sites where power access is limited or unavailable. Urns are useful for hot drinks operators. A 30-litre urn handles around 100 cups before refilling, so plan one urn for every 80 to 100 hot drink covers across a service period.
Outdoor events on soft ground create a problem for folding chairs and trestle table legs: the thin feet sink into grass or wet soil and become unstable. If your site is on grass, use beer benches instead, as their wider base distributes weight better. Alternatively, ensure the event uses matting or flooring boards across the seating area. Hard-standing surfaces and marquee flooring are fine for all furniture types.
Chafing dishes use gel fuel canisters or methylated spirit sachets rather than electricity. Each canister burns for around two to three hours. For a six-hour event, plan for two to three fuel changes per chafing dish. Fuel is not included in Expo Hire orders, so source this from a catering supplier or wholesaler before the event. Do not leave fuel sourcing until event day.
For busy food queues, crowd control barriers keep the queuing area defined and prevent queue-jumping from disrupting service. Expo Hire supplies standard interlocking crowd control barriers. Position them to create a single-file queue lane from the service point back towards the main crowd area. Allow enough barrier length so the queue can build without spilling into the walkway.
Expo Hire delivers and collects across England and Wales. Street food sites often have strict clearance windows set by the venue or local authority, so agree the collection time with your site manager before confirming your order details with us. Leaving hire equipment on site past a clearance window can cause issues with the venue and with subsequent events using the space. Build the collection window into your event schedule when you plan the day.
