Swadlincote is a former mining town in Derbyshire. It lies on the borders of Leicestershire and Staffordshire, about five miles south east of Burton-upon-Trent and nort-west of Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Both coal and clay were mined in Swadlincote, with the clay being valuable due to its high aluminia content. This made it suitable to make into pipes which were resistant to sewage.
