Shirebrook is a town in Derbyshire, which lies to the north of Mansfield and the southeast of Bolsover. Like much of the local area, Shirebook was a coal mining town with the Shirebrook Colliery sunk in 1896-1897 by the Shirebrook Coal and Iron company, and was in operation until 1993. The workforce was about evenly split during the miner's strike of 1984-85 which led to deep community divisions. The colliery has now been reclaimed for redevelopment to help regenerate the area.
