You should start with the table size, then add the drop. The standard planning rule is simple: table diameter plus a 30" drop on each side gives you the cloth diameter you need. A 5ft round table measures 60", so you need about 120" for a full drop. A 6ft round table measures 72", so a 132" round cloth gives you the right floor-length finish for most banqueting layouts.
| Cloth size | Best use | Typical seating |
|---|---|---|
| 54" Square | Small square table | 4 guests |
| 70" Square | Square dining or buffet table | 4 guests with drop, 6 guests tight |
| 90" Round | Small round banqueting table | 8 guests |
| 108" Round | Mid-size round banqueting table | 10 guests |
| 120" Round | Large round table | 10 to 12 guests |
| 132" Round | 6ft round banqueting table | 12 guests |
Round tables suit wedding breakfasts, gala dinners and awards because guests can hold a full table conversation. Square and trestle layouts suit buffets, registration desks, production tables and conference catering. You can also mix colours by function. Planners often use white or ivory on dining tables, black on service tables and a stronger shade such as burgundy, gold or red on a cake table or drinks station. If you need napkins to match the cloth colour, add them from Napkin Hire.
Poseur tables need a separate decision. A fitted poseur cloth gives you a clean cylinder shape that works in bars, drinks receptions and branded launches. A drape cloth gives a softer line, but the excess fabric can crowd stool legs and guest feet. If you want a fast, neat standing layout, most event teams choose a fitted poseur cover and keep the dining cloths for the seated space.
Wedding teams choose full-drop round cloths because they hide storage under the table and give the room one clean silhouette in every photo. Black cloths work well for crew catering, production and AV tables because they keep cables, cases and service stock out of view. Exhibition teams often choose square or trestle cloths for literature points, sampling stations and registration desks, then switch to fitted poseur cloths for sponsor networking zones.
If your venue uses a mixed room plan, keep one base colour across the dining tables and use accent cloths with care. A red, burgundy or gold feature cloth can frame a top table, DJ booth or gift table without pulling the whole room off scheme. You can finish the look with runners and sashes or matching chair covers when the chair pads need the same tone as the tables.
Measure the table diameter or width, then add a 30 inch drop on each side. A 60 inch round table needs about a 120 inch round cloth for a full drop.
Most planners use a 132 inch round cloth on a 6ft round banqueting table because that size gives a full floor-length drop.
Most event teams choose fitted poseur cloths because they keep the shape neat and leave clear space for stool legs and guest feet.
Yes. Many clients keep dining tables in white or ivory, then use black, burgundy, gold or red on feature tables, bars or service stations.
