Trestle Tables vs Banqueting Tables: Which Should You Hire?

Trestle tables and banqueting tables both look similar but serve different purposes. Hiring the wrong one creates problems with tablecloth sizing and seating layout.

Trestle tables and banqueting tables are both rectangular and widely used at events, but they serve different purposes. Hiring the wrong one creates problems with tablecloth sizing, seating layout, and the look of the room.

Trestle Tables

A standard trestle table is 6ft long and 2ft 6in wide. The narrow width makes it useful for buffet lines, market stalls, and registration desks where guests or staff stand at one side only. Because trestle tables are narrow, a cloth with a full drop on all sides will reach the floor on the short ends but leave a visible gap on the long sides. For surfaces used as a service or display area, a straight cloth with a short drop often looks neater.

Trestle tables are lightweight and easy to reposition, which suits outdoor events and setups where the layout may change during the day.

Banqueting Tables

Banqueting tables are wider, typically around 3ft across, which makes them more comfortable for seated dining. Guests opposite each other have room for plates, glasses, and a centrepiece without feeling crowded.

The most common sizes are 6ft and 8ft. An 8ft banqueting table seats eight people: four per side, or three per side with one at each end. A 6ft table seats six in the same configuration.

Tablecloth Sizing

Getting the right tablecloth comes down to two things: the table size and the drop you want. A floor-length drop looks formal and hides table legs. A half-drop to seat level is more practical if chairs are being pushed in and out during service, or if the table is against a wall.

For a 6ft banqueting table with a floor-length drop, a 90 x 156in cloth is the standard size. If you are unsure which size fits your tables, contact us and we will confirm the right option.

Which to Choose

Use trestle tables for buffets, registration, market stalls, and any surface where people serve rather than sit. Use banqueting tables for seated dinners and formal receptions where guests eat a meal.

If you are running both a buffet and a seated dinner at the same event, hire both. Trestle tables for the buffet line, banqueting tables for the dining area.
