Brynmawr is a market town in Blaenau Gwent, South Wales. It lies just off the Heads of the Valleys road between Merthyr Tydfil and Abergavenny. The town is sometimes cited as the highest town in Wales due to being situated at 1,250 to 1,500 feet above sea level. The town sprung up after the development of the Nantyglo ironworks in the early 19th century, as housing was required for workers. Although the town was seen as a dormitory town, several above-ground ore deposits out of town were workedon, and a few underground levels were eventually dug beneath the town.
