The standard two-leg beer bench tips when weight is unevenly distributed. We redesigned it with three legs per side. The result has been widely copied.
The standard beer bench has not changed much in decades. Two legs per side, a plank seat, a plank top. It works, broadly. But it has a problem that anyone who has used them at a busy outdoor event will recognise.
A two-leg bench tips. When someone sits at one end and the other end is empty, the bench lifts on one side. When someone stands up quickly from the middle, the bench rocks. At a busy beer garden or outdoor festival, this happens constantly. Spilled drinks, startled guests and, occasionally, someone going over the side.
This is not an edge case. It is the normal operating environment for a bench hired out for events. We run thousands of bench hires a year. The complaints were consistent.
We redesigned the bench with three legs per side instead of two: two legs at the ends and one centred underneath. The third leg eliminates the tipping moment that causes the bench to rock when weight is unevenly distributed.
The change sounds minor. The difference in practice is significant. A loaded bench does not tip when someone shifts their weight to one end. It does not rock when someone stands. At scale — fifty benches at a festival — the reduction in incidents is noticeable.
We also rebuilt the width. Standard beer benches are narrow enough to be uncomfortable for two adults sitting side by side for any length of time. The EventPro® bench is wider, which makes it workable for longer events where guests are seated for a meal rather than standing and drinking.
The seat and table surface are finished to handle outdoor conditions — rain, spilled drinks, repeated cleaning — without the surface deteriorating over a season of use.
The three-leg design has since been copied widely. Several suppliers now offer their own versions. We take that as confirmation that the engineering logic was sound.
EventPro® beer benches are available to hire through Expo Hire for events across England and Wales. If you need benches to keep — for a permanent beer garden, a venue, or a regular outdoor event series — the same product is available to buy outright through Expo Direct, with volume pricing available.
