The new harbour was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1970, and is capable of discharging iron ore vessels of 100,000 deadweight tonnage, a tenfold imporvement on the old dock. This has been improved further by modification and dredging to make it capable of harbouring vessels of over 170,000 deadweight tonnage.
