Wantage is a historic market town in the county of Oxfordshire, although it was part of Berkshire historically. The town lies about 8 miles southwest of Abingdon-on-Thames, 15 miles southwest of Oxford and 24 miles northwest of Reading. The town was birthplace of King Alfred the Great in 849, and it is mentioned in Domesday Book as being in the King's ownership. Wantage has had a market charter since 1246, and markets are held twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
