Tameside is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester in North West England. Tameside is bordered by the metropolitan boroughs of Stockport and Oldham to the south and north respectively, the city of Manchester to the west and the borough of High Peak in Derbyshire to the east across Longdendale. The borough of Tameside was created in 1974 by the Local Government Act as one of the ten metropolitan districts of Greater Manchester.
The naming of the borough was problematic with various names put forwards, with Tameside winning the eventual vote. The name Tameside relates to the River Tame but is a concocted name with no historical significance. The area is one of regeneration. In Ashton the old public baths have been reborn as a high-tech business incubator, while various new centres for further education have opened across the borough. However, a fifth of the population is still employed in manufacturing industries.
