Stalybridge is a town in Tameside, in Greater Manchester. It lies about eight miles east of Manchester city centre and six miles north of Glossop. Stalybridge became one of the first centres of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution when a water-powered cotton mill was constructed in the town in 1776. Cotton was the main source of employment in the town and the "cotton famine" caused by the American Civil War affected things greatly. The town has an established music tradition, with brass band contests held annually in the town since 1870.
