Hindley is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester. It lies about three miles east of Wigan and borders the villages of Ince-in-Makerfield, Aspull, Westhoughton, Atherton and Westleigh. Like much of the surrounding area, Hindley was a coal mining town, with the first recorded coal mine opening in 1528. By the end of the 19th century there were 20 collieries in the area, but by the start of the second world war these had all closed.
