Darwen is a market town in Lancashire located about 18 miles northwest of Manchester. The A666 road passes through Darwen towards Blackburn in the north and Bolton to the south. The area around Darwen has been inhabited since the early Bronze Age, with remains of a round barrow from approximately 2000 BC partially restored at the Ashleigh Barrow. Like most towns in the area, Darwen was a centre for textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Much of the town was built between 1850 and 1900, which date stones prominent on terrraces.
