The right tablecloth size depends on the table dimensions and how far the fabric drops down on each side. This guide covers 6ft and 8ft trestles, 5ft round tables and poseur tables with exact measurements.
Tablecloths are sized by the table dimensions plus the amount of fabric that hangs down on each side. Get the drop wrong and the cloth either sits awkwardly short or pools on the floor. The right drop depends on the table type and the formality of the event.
There are three standard drop lengths used for events. A lap drop (around 30cm) leaves the table legs visible and suits casual events such as village fetes and outdoor markets. A midway drop (around 50cm) covers most of the leg without reaching the floor, which works well for seated dining at standard-height tables. A floor-length drop (70cm or more) reaches the ground and is the standard for gala dinners, weddings, and any event where a formal look is required or items stored under the table need to be concealed.
Standard trestle tables come in two main sizes: 6ft (183cm long, 76cm wide) and 8ft (244cm long, 76cm wide). Both are approximately 74cm tall. For a floor-length cloth on a 6ft trestle, you need a cloth that is 183 + 74 + 74 cm long and 76 + 74 + 74 cm wide. That works out to 331cm x 224cm, typically sold as a specific trestle size in event hire catalogues.
For a midway drop on a 6ft trestle, the cloth needs to be roughly 283cm x 176cm. For the 8ft trestle with a floor drop, add 61cm to the length to get 392cm x 224cm. Most hire companies stock a standard pairing for each trestle size, so you select by table size and drop rather than calculating dimensions yourself. Check this when placing your tablecloth hire order.
The 5ft (152cm) round table is the most common for event dining, seating eight to ten guests. A floor-length cloth for a 5ft round needs a diameter of 152 + 74 + 74 cm, approximately 300cm. This corresponds to a 120-inch round cloth in most supplier catalogues. A lap drop cloth needs a diameter of around 212cm, approximately an 84-inch round.
Smaller rounds (3ft and 4ft) are sometimes used for cocktail-style seating or registration tables. A 3ft (91cm) round with a full drop uses a cloth around 239cm in diameter, approximately a 94-inch round. These are less commonly stocked, so check availability early if you need them.
Poseur or bar-height tables are taller than standard dining tables, typically 107cm to 110cm high. A floor-length cloth for a standard poseur top (60cm diameter) needs a diameter of around 280cm, corresponding to a 110-inch round. Getting the right cloth for poseur tables matters because the extra height makes even a slight size mismatch very visible. When ordering, always confirm the poseur table dimensions with the furniture hire company first.
For sit-down dining at a wedding or corporate dinner, a floor-length cloth on both the round tables and any serving or top tables creates a consistent look. At a less formal event with trestle tables and bench seating, a lap or midway drop looks more appropriate and is easier to manage when guests sit and stand throughout the event.
If the floor is uneven or carpeted, a full-length cloth can ride up unevenly around the edge. A midway drop avoids this and still looks formal enough for most events.
When ordering table hire alongside tablecloths, ask the supplier which cloth size they recommend for each table they stock. Most hire companies have a paired cloth for every table type, and matching them from the same supplier simplifies both delivery and the setup on the day.
