Gas cylinders must be stored upright in ventilated areas away from ignition sources. This guide covers safe handling and storage practices for events using gas-powered equipment.
Gas cylinders are widely used at events to power cooking equipment, barbecues, and heating. Handled correctly, they pose minimal risk. Handled carelessly, they can cause serious accidents. This guide sets out the key safety requirements for storing and using gas cylinders at events.
Store cylinders upright: Gas cylinders must always be stored and transported in an upright position. This prevents the liquid propellant from entering the regulator and reduces leak risk. Use a secure, lockable cage to prevent unauthorised access and to keep cylinders stable.
Keep away from heat sources: Store cylinders in a cool, shaded, well-ventilated area. Keep them clear of direct sunlight, open flames, and any equipment that generates heat. Never store gas cylinders inside an enclosed vehicle for longer than necessary.
Display safety signage: Mark all gas storage areas with appropriate warning signs, including "Flammable Gas" and "No Smoking". Signage should be visible from a distance and positioned at access points to the storage area.
Carry out regular checks: Inspect cylinders and connections at the start of each day. Use a gas leak detection spray on all connections and valves. If you detect a leak, close the valve, move the cylinder to open air, and do not use the equipment until the fault has been identified and resolved.
Maintain safe distances: Position gas cylinders at least one metre from any ignition source, including tent walls, cooking equipment, and generators. If you are using cooking equipment or barbecues, use hoses long enough to position the cylinder at a safe distance from the heat source.
Ensure adequate ventilation: Never use gas-powered equipment in fully enclosed spaces. For marquees and tents, ensure there is sufficient airflow to prevent gas accumulation. Outdoor events have a natural advantage here, but check that cooking areas are not enclosed by windbreaks that restrict airflow.
Train your staff: Every member of staff who handles gas cylinders should know how to connect and disconnect a regulator, how to identify a gas leak, and what to do if one occurs. Brief staff before the event, not during it.
Responding to a gas leak: The signs of a gas leak include a hissing sound from a connection or regulator, the smell of gas, and frost forming on a cylinder valve indicating a rapid release. If you suspect a leak, close the cylinder valve immediately, move people away from the area, and call the emergency services if the leak cannot be stopped.
Emergency response plan: Before the event, prepare a written emergency plan that covers gas leak response, fire safety, and evacuation procedures. Share this with all staff and make sure at least one person on site has completed a gas safety briefing.
Training for emergency scenarios: Regular practice of emergency procedures makes staff more confident and faster to respond. Cover gas leak response and fire safety in your pre-event training. Practical drills are more effective than written guidance alone.
