Choosing the right gazebo size comes down to what needs to fit inside and how the space will be used. This guide covers standard sizes, what each one holds, anchoring options and the case for multiple smaller gazebos.
Gazebo sizes for events are usually quoted in metres as width by depth. The three most common sizes are 3x3m, 3x6m, and 6x6m. Each suits different uses, and the right choice depends on what you need to fit inside, how many people will use the space, and what the surface conditions are.
A 3x3m gazebo gives nine square metres of covered space. In practice, the usable area is slightly less once the legs are accounted for. This size suits a single market stall, a bar serving point, a small information desk, or a seating area for four to six people. At a village fete or school fair, a 3x3m gazebo is the standard unit that each stall or activity gets.
The 3x3m size is light and quick to put up with two people. Most can be erected in under ten minutes once the process is familiar. This makes them good for events where setup time is limited or where the structure needs to move during the day.
A 3x6m gazebo doubles the floor area to 18 square metres. It suits a small catering operation, a craft stall with display space, or a reception and seating area combined. At a wedding or outdoor party, two to three 3x6m gazebos side by side can cover a dining area for 30 to 40 seated guests if the layout allows.
This size is noticeably heavier than the 3x3m and benefits from three people for erection. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for setup. The longer frame also means it is more affected by wind than the square version.
A 6x6m gazebo covers 36 square metres, which is enough for four to six trestle tables with chairs, a catering station, or a small stage area with some audience space. This is a substantial structure and requires four people to erect safely. Setup typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.
The 6x6m size is less portable than the smaller options and is better suited to events where the structure will stay in one place for the duration. It also requires more substantial anchoring.
Multiple 3x3m gazebos arranged in a grid or row give more flexibility than a single large structure. You can position them separately for different activities, gap them to create ventilation, or remove one if conditions change. The trade-off is more legs to anchor, more joints to check, and a less cohesive look.
A single large gazebo looks more deliberate and creates a more sheltered internal environment. For a catering operation or a formal outdoor seating area, one larger structure usually works better than several small ones joined together.
On grass, use ground pegs or anchor stakes driven at least 30cm into the ground at each leg. On hard surfaces such as concrete or tarmac, use water-filled weight bags on each leg. Each leg of a 3x3m gazebo should have at least 15kg of ballast in moderate wind conditions. In exposed locations, double this. Never leave a gazebo unanchored, even briefly. An unanchored gazebo in wind causes damage and injury.
