Freestanding patio heaters are the standard choice for outdoor event heating. A commercial mushroom heater at 2.5m to 3m height covers a radius of approximately 3 to 4 metres and heats a standing group of 15 to 20 people effectively. They run on standard propane bottles and produce 12 to 15kW of heat output.
Pyramid-style flame heaters are a visual as well as functional option. The visible flame creates a more ambient effect than a mushroom heater and suits garden parties, outdoor dining areas and premium outdoor hospitality spaces where the heater is part of the overall aesthetic rather than purely functional.
Smaller tabletop gas heaters suit intimate outdoor areas, covered terraces with low ceilings where a full-height heater would not fit, and smaller groups. Gas bottles are available to hire alongside all heaters. A standard full gas bottle lasts approximately 8 to 10 hours on a patio heater at medium setting.
Garden parties running into the evening, particularly from August onwards, need heating to keep outdoor areas comfortable after dark. A garden party for 80 people using a garden and terrace needs three to four patio heaters positioned across the outdoor area to maintain a comfortable temperature through the evening.
Marquee events need heating at the entrance and in any partially open section of the marquee. A fully enclosed marquee with its own heating system may not need additional heaters, but an open-sided or entrance area benefits significantly from a heater at each open point.
Beer festivals with outdoor seating areas use patio heaters to keep the seated zones usable after sunset. A covered beer garden with six to eight heaters distributed across the seating area gives festival goers a warm place to sit through the evening session.
Order one heater per 15 to 20 square metres of outdoor area you want to heat, or per 15 to 20 standing guests you want to cover. Gas bottles are available separately; order one bottle per heater plus one spare per four heaters for events running over four hours. Expo Hire delivers across England and Wales.
