Three banqueting chairs come up most often for weddings and formal dining events: Chiavari, Cross Back, and Wishbone. Each has a distinct look, and choosing the right one changes the feel of the room.
Chiavari chairs have an open-back design with a padded seat and a slim wooden frame. They are associated with formal events: black tie dinners, wedding breakfasts, and award ceremonies. We stock them in white, black, and limewash. White Chiavari chairs are the most common choice for weddings; black suits corporate formal events; limewash gives a slightly warmer, antique tone. Chair covers are available to hire alongside if you want to change the seat colour or add a sash.
Cross Back chairs have a solid oak frame with an X-shaped back and a natural wood finish. They suit barn weddings, rustic receptions, and outdoor events where the look is warm rather than formal. They work with or without a seat pad; we hire an ivory pad separately for guests who need extra comfort during a long dinner.
The Wishbone (Y-chair) has a Y-shaped back, a curved frame, and a woven seat. It sits between the formality of a Chiavari and the rusticity of a Cross Back. We stock it in beech. It works well at contemporary wedding receptions, design-led corporate events, and anywhere you want a recognisable chair shape without committing to a fully formal aesthetic.
We also stock a white-framed wooden banqueting chair with gold detailing. It suits gala dinners and award ceremonies where the chair is part of the room decoration and a specific colour scheme is in play.
For a traditional formal wedding, Chiavari white is the standard choice. For a barn or outdoor reception, Cross Back in oak. For a contemporary event with a design focus, Wishbone. For a gala or themed dinner where decor matters, the white and gold.
